Bridgeville driver puts pedal to the metal
Bridgeville resident Al Atallah finished strong earlier this month at Pennsylvania Motor Speedway to split the win at the Pizza Hut UFO Twin 30's.
In the second Pizza Hut UFO 30, on June 1 at Pennsylvania Motor Speedway, Atallah pulled out to a big lead following the worst wreck of the night, as Mel Minnick Jr., was tagged by another car and spun and hit the wall in turns 1 and 2.
Seconds later, Rodney Sweitzer clipped Minnick hard, ripping the nose off Minnick's car and tearing the wheel, hub and axle of of his machine.
Atallah also was impressive in the first race of the night.
Atallah tagged the front straight wall with about five laps to go in the first 30, allowing co-winner Baker of Fairmont, W.Va., a little more breathing room.
The two had been going at it ever since a restart on lap 4 put Atallah right beside Baker.
Then with two laps to go, another caution appeared, allowing Atallah one more shot at first. At this point Baker had lapped all the way up through sixth spot, but with the restart the "lucky dog" came into effect and allowed anyone one lap down back on the lead lap, and anyone with more than one lap down one of their laps back.
Atallah made the most of it.
He got by Baker to lead lap 29 as the pair actually swapped the lead several times through the turns.
Baker moved back in front in turns one and two on the last lap and led the rest of the way.
Atallah had tagged the wall a bit after Baker got by, allowing Lynn Geisler to get by for second at the finish.
It was the restart on lap 4 that put Atallah, who started sixth, in position to make a move.
The restart put Atallah right beside Baker. He challenged him for several laps following the restart but Baker began to put some distance between the two.
The two went in and out, dicing through traffic, using the entire track.
They used the entire track to get through the field.
Eventually, Atallah finished third in the first 30.
